A gum tree bark photo was the starting point for this piece with the background made on the embellisher using merino fibre, cotton knit, silk fabric and fibres, hand dyed muslin. Machine made cords, suffolk puffs, hand made and commercial beads, free machine embroidered circles plus lots of hand embroidery were added. The finished piece is 120cm x 60cm and is the largest textile piece I have completed. It is now hanging above the buffet in the dining room and at first I just had to keep looking at it at it looked so different from the framed pastel drawing we had hanging in that space!! Here are a couple of close up images as the textures don't show in the full image.
Before securing to the canvas some parts of the piece were padded underneath to accentuate the flow lines from left to right and also to create different heights for added interest.
I enjoyed working on this piece and am pleased with the end result.

this is lovely and thanks for the close-ups - i am very drawn to bark as an inspiration but have yet to tackle it in stitch, i wish i could do something like this ... so full of texture, subtle colouring and layers of fibre
